Freshman’s 01/W refurb

The following is a set of photos from Freshman’s 01/W refurbishment. In fact, his 01/W suffered from the „no sound“ syndrome, the „sticky keys“ syndrome, lots of sluggish panel switches and a dim display. Freshman fixed it all in one repair which took several days, but in return his 01/W now operates like brand new.

Thanks for all the great info, I did the key replacement, reassembled the O1W and now it doesn’t have any software, the LCD lighths up but that’s it, I tried to re-initialize by holding compare & reset while powering on, but no change……
Help please, this keyboard worked fine prior to this attempt to repair four broken keys…….What is your opinion……Thanks!

      Hi Billy,

to your relief, it’s often small cause and big effect. Thoroughly check the proper position of all parts, screws and connectors, also check the fuses on the power supply unit.

      Regards,
      Hajo

Hey Hajo at present im on a cruise ship as a musician, a few days ago whilst playing my korg m1 I got the scent of something burning immediately the power gone off then came back on when I press the keys it blurted then gone silent, later that evening while searching for help on the net I found this site which gives me a lot of hope. I must confess I have -0 knowledge of all these electrical stuff you guys mention about but for curiosity sake I went ahead looking up the problem and found that after looking at all the boards there was no traces of any leaks or corrosions everything seems perfect but after carefully looking at the board KLM-1261 which I believe is the audio section I found R79 resistor burnt one of the electricians replace it with a 18ohms one but still no sound he try other test but not sure what to look for since he never work with these stuff before.
Can someone tell me what else I should be checking for or change? its my second korg m1 for the past 5years both without sound I would really love to have them working again please. Thanks in advance.

      Hi Musicman,

thanks for your visit and all the best for your „musical journey“. R80 and R79 (10Ω each) are part of the ±12V buffering circuitry for the op-amp stages and the ±5V stabilizing („clamping“) circuitry for the 4053 output multiplexers. I would recommend to first check the clamp diodes ZD1 and ZD2 and the capacitors around them. If the error is not within this area, a short in either one of the ±12V or ±5V branches is the cause.

      Regards,
      Hajo

hey hajo well many many thanks to you once more im now finally on vacation, well as i promise i did go through my other korg m1 which was lying dead for about 4yrs my first glance at the audio board i realise that the R80 resister was burnt i test it but nothing, i then look at the other boards but found nothing, i then replace the resister and there my korg M1 was back to life except that i have to replace most of the keys, looks like the person who had it before had a great deal in making up these keys to work. presently im doing a deep clean with rubbing alcohol, replace the battery and factory sounds with a pcm card i ordered fron voice crystal. many thanks for the guidience in getting my two keyboards to life again this means so much to me. all the best in aspireing your goals and hope you continue to inspire and bring joy to others. one love

hey Hajo im experiencing a problem with my m1 actually with both of them i did replace the burnt resister R78 with a 10 ohms one i bought in radio shack and it did play beautifully but not im experiencing cracking sound from them both, luckily i got a old one from my friend while i was home so i transfer the audio board from his to mine and it works perfect, but i would love to get my two boards up and running again do you have any idea as to the cause? also the screws are getting a bit loose at the back i have to be constantly checking it to make sure they dont fall out any idea as to how i can fix that, i really appreciate the help you have given me thus far thank you very much. you can reply to me via my address it`s [edit: removed by Hajo] thank you again.

      Hi Musicman,

nice to hear from you again. No specific ideas, unfortunately. A technician will have to check the two faulty boards, ideally in comparison to the working one. Get yourself a new set of of screws for a start. If they will still fall out, use a hand tap to restore the threads and then again another new set of screws.

      All the best,
      Hajo

Hello i need to help with my korg 01r/w. When power up its not booting no combi no red lights nothing only blank display lights up. Year ago repaired sound problem by changing r79 and 80 since it was fine but now the issue with power. thinking about lcd change but first will be happy for letting me know what can be the reason. Thank you and wait for your reply.

    • Hajo sagt:

      Hi Mirek,

check the fuses in the power supply unit (PSU) first. If one of them is blown, do not just replace it but try to narrow down the cause of the „high current situation“. Does the PSU operate stand-alone without the mainboard connected? Are there any other bad electrolytic and/or tantalium capacitors on the mainboard? Hope this helps.

      All the best,
      Hajo

      Hi Markee,

sorry for the long delay. Is it „memory low“ or rather „battery low“ that you see?

      All the best,
